The concept of Lares originated in ancient Roman religion and mythology. In Roman mythology, Lares were guardian spirits or deities who were believed to protect and watch over households, families, and individuals. They were often depicted as small, youthful figures with wings and were thought to bring good fortune and protect against harm.

The worship of Lares was an important part of Roman religious practices, with families offering prayers, sacrifices, and offerings to their Lares in order to seek their protection and blessings. Lares were also believed to be the spirits of ancestors who had passed away, making them a link between the living and the dead.

Over time, the concept of Lares evolved and expanded to include other types of guardian spirits, such as Lares Viales (guardians of roads and travel) and Lares Compitales (guardians of crossroads and intersections).

The worship of Lares remained an important aspect of Roman religious life, with shrines and altars dedicated to them found in many Roman homes and public spaces.
